Growing Old

      Despite their regenerative powers, Time Lords cannot fight old age forever. After spending hundreds of years defending the planet Trenzalore from alien armies, the Eleventh Doctor becomes wrinkled and gray. He knows that he has used up all his available regenerations and that, this time, death will be final - or so he thinks.


      Having moments before believed he was facing certain death, and being willing to die for the people of Trenzalore, the Doctor welcomes this unexpected gift from the remaining Time Lords.        


      It is a faithful companion Clara who appeals to the Time Lords to save the dying, aged Eleventh Doctor. They give him another lifecycle and he uses the excess regeneration energy to destroy the Daleks invading Trenzalore.

Mythical Hero

      The Doctor's appearances on Earth and services to humanity have gone down in legend and references to him are scattered throughout folklore. The "Man in the Blue Box" takes on an almost religious significance in this stained glass window from a London church.

Anatomy of the Doctor: Part 2

      Time Lords have two hearts and a binary vascular system, which enables them to survive major accidents and many physical and temporal shocks that would kill a human being. They also have a respiratory bypass system that enables them to survive without breathing for some time.

     A new version of the Doctor is created after a biological metacrisis combines genetic information from the Doctor's severed hand and from the human Donna Noble, with energy from an abortive regeneration. Although he looks like the Tenth Doctor, this half-Time Lord and half-human creation has only one heart and is unable to regenerate.

Anatomy of the Doctor: Part 1

      Although he looks like a human being (and once claimed human ancestry on his mother's side), the Doctor is an alien being and his Time Lord physiology has many differences from our own. Physically, the Doctor is stronger, has sharper senses, and greater powers of endurance than a human being, and can cope with heat, cold, radiation and powerful forces better than humans can. There are also some differences to his internal anatomy that have confused many Earthly doctors.

     When the Doctor's right hand is severed by a Sycorax warrior, residual regeneration energy allows him to grow another. His friend Captain Jack acquires the original, and the liquid bubbles whenever the Doctor or a product of his DNA is near. Later, after a run-in with a Dalek triggers the Doctor's regeneration process, he blasts his regeneration energy into his severed hand, healing himself without having to change appearance - but effectively using up one whole regeneration.

Man's Best Friend and Doctor Fact

   The Doctor feels a special affinity for the human race. Even though he has witnessed the very worst of human behavior, he is still awed by their potential for goodness. He cannot bear to stand by and watch humanity suffer- especially if children are crying.

•     River Song may be the only non-Gallifreyan to know the Doctor's real name, although the Doctor claims that it is unpronounceable for humans. His nickname at the Prydonian Academy was "Theta Sigma."                            

Traveling Through Time

    The gift of time travel also brings responsibility. The rules of time are fluid and complicated. Actions have consequences, and not all time is in flux - some tragedies cannot be reversed.
   The Doctor has prevented catastrophe from rewriting the future from Earth many times. He sees his relationship with humans as a strength, but his enemies regard it as a weakness that is easy to exploit.
   Some moments are temporal tipping points, where decisive action could create a new timeline. When the future pivots around human-Silurian negotiations for a cohabitation deal, the Doctor is hopeful for a new era on Earth.
   Some events are fixed and cannot be changed. The Doctor can only mourn and carry on. On Bowie Base One, the Doctor refuses to follow the rules of time and rescues the crew.

Renegade Time Lord

   The Doctor believes himself to be the last surviving Time Lord - a long lived and incredibly technologically advanced race that possesses the secret of time travel. Unable to agree with a policy, the Doctor became renegade, stealing a TARDIS and using it to explore time and space.

   When Time Lords come to an end of their lives, they have the ability to regenerate their bodies and carry on with living. Although each regeneration brings out different facets of a Time Lord's personality, the Doctor's essential character has remained unchanged for centuries.
